Why Private ADHD Titration Is Relevant 2023

Private ADHD Titration

There is a nationwide shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems as well as an increase in demand worldwide.

Our service can offer private ADHD testing as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments are free and include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a thorough evaluation of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history, as well as an evaluation using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

Following your assessment you will be advised that medication may be beneficial for your situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which can take place in person, via video link or over the phone). Your physician will go over the different options for medication available. If you decide to start taking medication, we will help you to titrate your dose to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process could take a few weeks. It involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication gradually until the proper balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to need to adjust two or three medicines before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. Parents must participate in this titration process and keep an eye on their child's behavior so that they can inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS care the medication you take will be given as an individual prescription that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in the consultation fee). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to check your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure measurements. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the evaluation is completed, you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. The appointment usually takes place through a video call using zoom but in certain circumstances it is possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an extra cost).

In this session, we'll discuss any treatment options we have and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration plan. This will include a discussion and review of your medication dosage and any side effects that you may be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via telephone or video consultation. The pharmacy will charge you for any medication costs.

The psychiatrist will ask you questions about your family history as well as the effects of your ADHD symptoms on your daily life and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you may be experiencing. ADHD is a genetic condition, so it's important to assess your family history in order to determine if you're at risk of developing this disorder.

It is essential that you are honest and open to the doctor during the assessment, since the information they get will be used to determine if your ADHD fits the diagnostic criteria. This is a crucial step, as a wrong diagnosis could lead to inappropriate medication prescription.

If you've decided that you would like to be treated for your ADHD We will set up a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialize in this field. If you want to start treatment immediately you can start treatment immediately following the diagnosis. You can also wait two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

We recommend that if you are unsure of your preferences, you talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private appointment. Certain providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require an GP letter. Find out if your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means that you will be referred to them once you leave the clinic for medication prescription.

Medication

For many people who want a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is a key part of their journey. Getting an appointment with an NHS psychiatrist can be a challenge and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long, and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One method to avoid this is to request your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means you can select an organization that offers a private assessment and titration. This will help you reduce time and be more convenient, especially when you are on a tight schedule.

If you are recommended, your physician will examine you to determine if require medication adjustment. You will need to fill out forms that vary by doctor however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories going to childhood and adulthood. They will help your physician determine any issues that could suggest you should not take ADHD medications if they are prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will be a combination stimulants and nonstimulant medications. The combination will be carefully tested and monitored to find the most effective combination for you, taking into account any existing conditions you have. The titration procedure can be long and may require multiple appointments before you are stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and amount of medication you're taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. Your doctor will ensure that you are stable with the medication, record any side effects that you have experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dose. You will also be required to attend a regular health check, which could include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings and an annual review.

For some it could be because they are satisfied with their medication and don't need any further discussion on their  titration . If, however, they do need further discussions about their titration and treatment plans, it is possible that they will be passed back to the private clinic that conducted their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration appointment will be included in the consultation fee, and they will receive their medication through a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This may cost more than a prescription from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
